Outer Banks

Welcome

Adventurers and sun-seekers, anglers and explorersÑthese are the people who have been drawn to this thin strip of sandy coast for thousands of years. First, the Croatan came to fish and hunt. Then, European colonists came to explore the New World. Hundreds of years later, in the same spirit of discovery, the Wright brothers, pioneers of flight, came to make history on the windswept sand dunes.

Needless to say, most people find it, whether that be along the wide sandy beaches or at the helm of a fishing boat. With a variety of adventures around every corner, as well as plenty of space to just spread out a beach towel and relax, the Outer Banks can mean paradise to just about anyone.

Protruding out into the Atlantic Ocean, the Outer Banks is primarily made up of sand and trees. On one side, clean ocean waters wash up against pristine beaches; on the other, peaceful sound waters provide safe harbors for boats and lagoons for wildlife. The thin strip of land in between is at the mercy of wind and water, resulting in a rugged terrain of windswept sand dunes, maritime forests, flatlands and marshes.

Of course, thatÕs all part of the appeal. Defined by the forces of nature, the Outer Banks is a beach destination like no other.

But for such a thin stretch of land, the Outer Banks has a surprisingly long list of activities, adventures and attractions. Surfing, fishing, kayaking, golfing, hang gliding, parasailing, jet skiing, wildlife spotting, lighthouse climbing and sailing are just a few of the activities that are available any time of year, all the way from Corolla to Ocracoke Island.

Use this guide to plan your own Outer Banks adventure, from the sound to the sea and everywhere in between.

Enjoy!
